Coronavirus continues to spread rapidly in Germany. The number of registered new infections has reached a new record level of 21,506 cases within one day on Thursday. It was the highest single-day rise since the pandemic began, according to the country’s centre for disease prevention, Robert-Koch-Institute (RKI), in its report on Friday morning .
Thursday’s caseload was an increase by more than 1,600 from the previous day, the RKI’s data shows. On Friday a week ago, the number of new infections reported was 18,681.
According to the RKI, a total of 619,089 people have been infected with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The country also registered 166 new virus-related deaths on Thursday, bringing the total death toll to 11,096. The RKI estimates that around 402,500 people have now recovered.

According to the RKI, the reproduction figure, or R-value for short, was 0.79 in Germany (previous day: 0.81). This means that ten infected persons infect an average of about eight more people. If the value is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection process subsides.
To reach a controllable situation, the reproductive rate would have to remain well below 1 for a long time, at 0.7 or even lower.
Since Monday, there has been a partial shutdown in Germany. Restaurants and bars, museums and fitness studios are closed. This will initially apply throughout November.
