Kenneth Gbandi has been elected the new chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Europe (NIDOE). The election took place at the weekend in Athens, Greece, during the annual general meeting of the body.
The event was graced by, among others, Hon. Rita Odichimma Orji, Chairperson of the Federal House of Representatives’ Committee on Diaspora Affairs, and the host ambassador, His Excellency Ogah Usman Ari, who is the Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Greece. Gbandi, who is the outgoing president of NIDO Germany, succeeds, Dr George Madueke.
In his post-election speech, Gbandi thanked members of the organisation for the confidence reposed in him and he pledged to reposition NIDOE and “rekindle, once again, the Diaspora indomitable spirit”. Gbandi, who is the publisher of the African Heritage magazine and a communal politician in Hamburg, also promised to push the issues pertinent to the Nigerian Diaspora in Abuja. Moreover, he would avail the federal government of the views of the Diaspora on important national issues.
A flood of congratulatory messages from across Europe, North America and Nigeria has greeted Kenneth Gbandi’s election. In his message, Femi Awoniyi, the publisher of The African Courier magazine described the election as well-deserved and praised the new NIDOE chief for his “visionary leadership”, which he “abundantly displayed as the president of the German chapter of the organisation”. Awoniyi called on Gbandi to take NIDOE to greater heights.
