German Africa Prize 2023 to be presented in Berlin

German Africa Prize 2023 goes to the Cameroonian women’s peace platform “1st National Women’s Convention for Peace in Cameroon”. The Deutsche Afrika Stiftung e.V. (German Africa Foundation), organisers of the award, has announced.

The Prize will be presented to the organisation by the Vice President of the German Bundestag Katrin Göring-Eckhardt at a ceremony on 30 November at the Allianz Forum in Berlin.

The 1st National Women’s Convention for Peace in Cameroon is the first collective to be honoured with the German Africa Prize, which recognizes the significant contribution of the organisation and its members towards conflict resolution as well as their pioneering work in promoting dialogue for peace and reconciliation in Cameroon.

The Women’s Peace Platform currently comprises 77 organisations that carry out important work throughout the country and are committed to helping internally displaced persons, protecting children, promoting education in conflict areas and tackling gender-based violence, among other things.

Sally Mboumien, Special Rapporteur on gender-based violence, Esther Omam and Marthe Wandou, both members of the Council of Elders, will receive the award on behalf of the women of the Peace Platform in Berlin.

The German Africa Prize is awarded annually since 1993 by the Deutsche Afrika Stiftung e.V. to honour outstanding personalities from the African continent who have made a special and lasting contribution to democracy, peace, human rights, art and culture, the social market economy and social issues.

It is the most important prize of its kind in Germany and is presented each year to the recipients by a high-ranking representative of the German constitutional authorities. Once again, 300 guests from politics, business and society are expected to attend this year’s ceremony.
