Ghanaian-Born Edward Enninful named first male editor of British Vogue magazine

The globally acclaimed fashion magazine, British Vogue, has a new editor, its first Black editor in more than 100 years of its existence.

45-year-old Edward Kobina Enninful was announed during the week as the 11th editor of Vogue, its first male editor. Enninful as editor of Vogue is notably the first Black editor of a mainstream UK fashion magazine.

He succeeds Alexandra Shulman, who served as head of the magazine for 25 years.

Until his appointment, Ghanaian-born Enninful was  W Magazine’s Fashion and Style Director. He spent his childhood in London and started his fashion career after he was model-scouted in 1988.

He became the youngest ever fashion director for an international publication when he took charge of the i-D magazine. Other portfolios he has held in the fashion world include stints with Italian Vogue and American Vogue.

His predecessor had nice words about the new Vogue boss who takes charge on August 1, “Edward is an exceptionally talented stylist who will no doubt bring an exciting new creative aesthetic to the magazine,” Shulman said.

A recipient of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), Enninful received the honour in October 2016 at the Buckingham Palace for his services to diversity in the fashion industry.

Enninful, 45, was born in Ghana, where he spent some of his childhood years. He later moved to London along with his parents and five siblings. At 16, his modeling career was launched after a fortuitous encounter with fashion scout Simon Foxton on a train ride.
