African Mums in Deutschland wins Facebook Accelerator Program

African Mums in Deutschland, a support group for African women in Germany founded by Maame Adwoa Dentaa Amoo, has been announced as one of the winners of the 2021 Facebook Community Accelerator Program.

The Community Accelerator is part of Facebook’s Community Leadership Program, a global initiative that invests in people building online communities. The Program helps leaders harness the power of their communities to turn impactful ideas into actions and winners will receive training, mentorship and up to $50,000 in funds to invest in an initiative that extends their community’s positive impact.

“My heart is full! I am glad to announce that my community has been chosen to participate in the 2021 Facebook Community Accelerator out of over13,000 communities that applied,” Maame joyfully said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

“Most of you who know me, know that I created this community after my struggles of being a single mother in Germany. I was completely lost and thought to myself, I don’t want another woman to be in this situation!

“We needed a safe space, a supportive Sisterhood, a place to share that crucial information that could make our journey so much easier and better so that no one gets left behind and we did it!

“Over the years our community has grown and positively impacted the lives of over 5,300 women of Black/African heritage with projects such as free German courses, workshops, seminars and a helpline,” the African social entrepreneur wrote.

Maame Dentaa Amoo started the Community as a Facebook group in 2018 when she saw the need for a safe space for African women to share crucial information about life in Germany so that they could achieve their social and economic goals easier.

She is extremely grateful for the opportunity of participating in the Facebook Community Accelerator Program and proud that a community that African women built together gets to be highlighted on the world’s stage. Maame was also excited for the opportunity to learn, grow, scale and further impact the lives of African women in Germany.

According to Facebook, this year’s participating communities have demonstrated impact and capacity to scale. Through the Accelerator-Program, they will receive growth-related training, hands-on mentorship and funds to grow their community and impact.
