AYEA: Celebrating the educational achievement of African youths in Germany

EDITORIAL

A major event in the African community takes place in Hamburg on Saturday, 22 October. Expected to be joined by diplomats, German politicians, city officials and other guests, the community will honour youths of African descent who have excelled in their educational and training pursuits in the past year.

The outstanding Black youths will be bestowed with the African Youth Education Awards (AYEA) 2022.

The empowerment scheme, initiated in 2011 to improve the observed low educational attainment level of young people in the community, will also celebrate the 10th anniversary at this year’s event.

AYAE is premised on the belief that positive role models from within their own communities will inculcate a higher sense of self-efficacy in the youths and push them to achieve their potential.

Now firmly anchored in the annual calendar of the prestigious events in the Black community in Germany, the initiators of AYEA, led by the indefatigable Ghanaian journalist and activist Desmond John Beddy, can be lauded for a significant contribution to the culture of self-help in the community.

AYEA is organised yearly with the support of TopAfric Radio presenters and there are more than 40 community leaders – from Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Germany, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, Zambia, Ivory Coast, Romania, Benin and the Caribbean – who plan and implement the yearly event.

By highlighting success stories, AYEA has become a veritable source of inspiration for greater educational achievements among youths of African origin in Germany.

Youngsters and their parents, invited guests and members of the community will turn out on Saturday in beautiful attires to celebrate a remarkable initiative that sets a glowing example of what and how individuals can make a difference in their communities.

Thus, the 10th anniversary of the AYEA is both a celebration of Black youths in Germany and of self-initiative in the community at large.

Kudos to the founders of AYEA – Desmond John Beddy, Lawyer Assignon K. Akakpo (Togo), Lawyer Iyare Imasi (Nigeria) and Ba Hawa Fofana (Mali) – for their foresight.
