Bavaria to speed up the process of skilled worker immigration

Bavaria has unveiled a new initiative aimed at simplifying the immigration process for skilled workers to address the state’s urgent labour shortages. As from next year’s summer the recognition of foreign professional qualifications will be expedited.

According to Social Minister Ulrike Scharf, the ‘Fast Lane’ initiative is designed to streamline bureaucratic procedures, reducing waiting times for skilled immigrants. It will centralize the recognition process for foreign qualifications and facilitates faster visa approvals, she said.

Ms Scharf said the plan is to have a dedicated contact point for each profession, emphasizing the success of the fast-track process for caregivers, which has been operational since June 2023.

Since its implementation, the fast-track process in the care sector has led to a 25% increase in applications while reducing the processing time from about seven weeks to five, she revealed. The entire system has been fully digitized to enhance efficiency.

Bavaria plans to extend this framework to other professions with high demand for workers. By speeding up the integration of foreign professionals into the workforce, the state hopes to strengthen its economy while addressing demographic challenges.

Employers also benefit from this program as they are granted more authority to expedite the immigration of potential hires. They can sign agreements with the relevant immigration authorities, which include submitting necessary documentation and fees upfront. This partnership simplifies administrative hurdles, ensuring that skilled workers can enter the country to take up their employment without unnecessary delays.

Furthermore, Bavaria’s approach aligns with Germany’s broader strategy to attract international talent as the country faces a significant shortage of skilled labour. Federal and state governments are working in tandem to revise immigration laws, aiming to make Germany a more attractive destination for global talent.
