Gloria was Born and raised in Bayelsa State, her career in nursing spans over 24 years, culminating in her role as Deputy Director of Nursing Services at the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa before assuming her current position as First Lady on 14 February 2020. Her extensive education, including a Ph.D. in Community Health and multiple international certifications, highlights her dedication to advancing healthcare and public health initiatives.
A Lifelong Commitment to Community Development
Gloria’s impact extends beyond her professional accomplishments. As the Founder and President of the Gloria Diri Foundation (GDF), she has spearheaded several initiatives targeting the welfare of women, children, the elderly, and the vulnerable. Her projects, such as the Care for the Elderly and Widows, have provided support to hundreds in Bayelsa State.
Recognising the challenges of rural communities, she launched the Bayelsa Women Empowerment Initiative, distributing farming tools to over 500 women, thereby promoting food sufficiency and sustainable livelihoods.
Championing Women’s Development on a Global Scale: The Woman of Today Development Association (TWOT)
Beyond her local contributions, she established herself as a global advocate for women’s empowerment through The Woman of Today Development Association (TWOT). With its international headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, TWOT is dedicated to promoting the advancement of women in various sectors worldwide. The organization offers resources, mentorship, and support to women aspiring to leadership positions, entrepreneurship, and professional excellence.
TWOT’s initiatives span continents, focusing on education, skill development, health empowerment for women and policy advocacy. The organization also leads campaigns against gender-based violence, provides career counselling, and supports female entrepreneurs in establishing and scaling their businesses. Through TWOT, Gloria is setting a global standard for women’s development, empowering them to take charge of their futures and contribute meaningfully to society.
Championing the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gloria launched the Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT) in July 2020. The initiative addresses Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Sexual Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) by offering survivors access to free medical care, legal aid, and psychological support. Her tireless advocacy led to the domestication of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Bill in Bayelsa State in February 2021. The establishment of the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) and a shelter home in June 2023 for protecting vulnerable populations.
Pioneering Healthcare Facilities
In addition to her social initiatives, she made history in Bayelsa by establishing Martha’s Medical Services, an ultra-modern facility that caters to women’s reproductive health, infant care, and the elderly. The facility, which also serves as a home for the elderly, is the first of its kind in the state.

Her contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious United Nations International Gender Champion Peace Award and the African Women in Leadership Award. She holds several honorary titles and fellowships, reflecting her broad influence across healthcare, education, and gender advocacy.

Beyond her roles as a public servant and healthcare professional, she is an accomplished author and motivational speaker. Personal Life
Gloria is married to Senator Douye Diri, the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, and they are blessed with five children. A devoted Christian, she balances her busy schedule with leisure activities including golf, reading, writing, and enjoying good music.
