Ethiopian appoints head of Togo-based airline its new CEO

Ethiopian Airlines has named its chief operating officer, Mesfin Tasew, as the successor to CEO Tewolde Gebremariam, who is retiring early for health reasons.

The carrier’s board Chairman, Girma Wake, told a news conference that Mesfin had been chosen to lead the group , effective 23 March 2022, after serving in his present post for 10 years on Thursday. He is also the chief executive officer of Togo-based ASKY Airlines, which serves markets in West and Central Africa and has a strategic partnership with Ethiopian Airlines.

Mesfin has 38 years of experience in airline management and operations in the areas of aircraft maintenance and engineering, procurement, information technology, flight operations, capability development, capacity building, development of corporate strategies, airline operation management, and corporate leadership. He earned Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Open University in the UK, MSc degree in Electrical Engineering specializing in Communications Engineering from Addis Ababa University, and BSc degree in Electrical Engineering from Addis Ababa University.

Outgoing CEO Tewolde has led Ethiopian Airlines since 2011, growing it to a fleet of 131 planes operating on local and international routes, from just 50 planes in 2015.
