Germany: AfricanTide mobilises Africans for NRW elections

On 13 September, elections for Lord Mayors, Mayors, Councillors and the Integration Councils will be held in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

AfricanTide Union e.V. is calling on members of the African community to participate in the elections.

“Your opinion counts, because it is about you, your family and our community!” the organisation said in a public message to Africans.

Dr RosaLyn Dressman, founder and president of AfricanTide Union, believes that the best way the African community’s interests can be best served is for Africans to engage with the processes of governance. An important part of the processes are elections, through which persons who will preside over the affairs of communities, towns and cities will be chosen.

This is why the organisation is encouraging Africans with the right to vote to participate as candidates and voters in the elections.

AfricanTide is happy that many Africans are contesting for seats in the integration councils of their towns and cities, Ms Dressman said.

To mobilise voters in the African community in Dortmund, the organisation is organising a town hall meeting at which African candidates for the city’s integration council can introduce themselves to their community and explain what they plan to do if elected.

“We invite you to listen to the candidates, talk to them about your expectations and let them convince you of their goals and ideas about our common future in Dortmund!” AfricanTide said in a public call to Africans living in the city.

The event takes place both online and offline (Afrikahaus, Körnebachstraße 50-52, 44143 Dortmund) with up to 40 guests.
