Germany: Number of foreign students rises to record level

The number of international students at German universities has risen to a new high in the current winter semester. According to a quick survey, between 360,000 and 370,000 foreign students are currently enrolled, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has announced. Last winter semester, the number was just under 350,000.

According to DAAD projections, the number of international first-year students has risen particularly sharply from 74,000 a year ago to between 75,000 and 85,000 today. According to the figures, Germany has thus become the world’s fourth most popular study destination, after the United States, the UK and France.

The figures prove that German universities are extremely attractive for international students, said DAAD President Joybrato Mukherjee. With a view to attracting foreign professionals, it is important to provide even more support for international students during their studies. This include support in the transition to the labour market and the reduction of bureaucratic hurdles in employment and residence permits, he advocated.

“We must encourage and provide the best possible support to all students who aspire to a career in Germany after graduating from university, also in our own best interest,” Mukherjee continued.
