Germany prepares for snap elections as Bundestag is dissolved

Germany is gearing up for early general elections after President Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced the dissolution of the Bundestag, the country’s lower house of parliament, on 27 December 2024. This marks the beginning of an accelerated political transition, with the snap election scheduled for 23 February 2025.

Countdown to the Polls

In his official statement, President Steinmeier emphasized the importance of political stability amid Germany’s current challenges. “I have decided to dissolve the 20th German Bundestag to fix the date for an early election for 23 February,” he declared, highlighting that the move aims to restore confidence in governance during a turbulent period.

This development follows a no-confidence vote against Chancellor Olaf Scholz on 16 December, which led to the breakdown of his 3-party “traffic light” coalition. Scholz’s dismissal of Finance Minister Christian Lindner of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) on 6 November led the FDP to withdraw from the government, leaving Scholz without a parliamentary majority.

The decision for the early election date was agreed upon by parliamentary leaders of Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Friedrich Merz.

Key Campaign Issues

The snap election campaign is expected to focus on a range of pressing national and international issues:

  1. Immigration and Migration Policy:
Migration remains a divisive topic, particularly after recent state elections in eastern Germany where anti-immigration sentiment gained traction. The Christmas market terror attack in Magdeburg has brought domestic security and border control to the forefront of political debate, with parties proposing stricter measures to address these concerns.
  2. Economic Recovery:
Revitalizing the economy will be another pivotal issue. Germany, grappling with slowing growth and inflationary pressures, requires policies to stimulate industrial production, boost job creation, and stabilize household incomes.
  3. Support for Ukraine:
With the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Germany faces the challenge of balancing military aid, humanitarian support and managing its energy dependency as the war continues to strain European unity and resources.
  4. Domestic Security:
Rising concerns about terrorism and public safety are shaping electoral narratives, with calls for enhanced security measures and investments in law enforcement.
Party Positions and Polls

Germany’s major political parties have begun unveiling their draft election manifestos. The CDU has positioned itself as a defender of traditional values and economic stability, gaining momentum in recent polls. Under Friedrich Merz’s leadership, the CDU currently leads the SPD, whose campaign centers on social equity and progressive policies.

Other parties, including the Greens and the Free Democratic Party (FDP), are expected to play influential roles, with the Greens advocating for climate action and the FDP focusing on fiscal responsibility and digital innovation. Meanwhile, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) seeks to capitalize on anti-immigration rhetoric to expand its support base.

What’s at Stake

The upcoming election is widely seen as a critical juncture for Germany’s political future. It will determine not only the country’s next leadership but also the trajectory of its domestic and foreign policies. As political parties gear up for the campaign, voters will be closely watching how candidates address the pressing issues of security, economic recovery and Germany’s role on the global stage.

With just under two months until the polls, Germany is entering a period of heightened political activity, setting the stage for a potentially transformative election.
