Germany’s Black Community loses foremost member

The sudden death of Mike Reichel, a leading member of the Black Community in Germany, has been announced.

Reichel (54), who tragically ended his own life in Berlin last week, was one of the pioneer members of the Initiative of Black People in Germany (Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland or ISD) and was a co-founder of the Black History Month in Berlin.

Leading members of the ISD have been paying glowing tributes to an energetic and committed activist for the interests of people of African descent in the country.

Born to an African-American father and German mother, Reichel, who was the first Black police officer in Berlin, spoke out loudly in many newspaper interviews about the experiences of Black people and the challenges they face in society.

An event in honour of the departed Afro-German author and activist will take place in Berlin on Thursday, 14 December.

Organised by Each One Teach One (EOTO) e.V. and Black women group ADEFRA, the Reading and Open Exchange (“Lesung und offener Austausch”) will take place from 6-8 pm at the premises of EOTO in the Müllerstraße 56-58 (im Paul Gerhart Stift), 13349 Berlin.

May the soul of Michael Reichel rest in Peace.
