THE AFRICAN COURIER. Reporting Africa and its Diaspora! The African Courier is an international magazine published in Germany to report on Africa and the Diaspora African experience. The first issue of the bimonthly magazine appeared on the newsstands on 15 February 1998. The African Courier is a communication forum for European-African political, economic and cultural exchanges, and a voice for Africa in Europe.
Ghana has officially announced a groundbreaking visa-free policy for all African nationals, underscoring its commitment to fostering Pan-African unity and economic integration. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo granted executive approval for the initiative on 18 December 2024.
The move positions Ghana among a select group of African nations — Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin — that offer visa-free entry to all African passport holders. The policy is part of President Akufo-Addo’s broader vision to promote free movement across the continent, a critical step towards stimulating intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Fulfilling a Pan-African Promise
The visa-free initiative fulfills a promise made by President Akufo-Addo during the Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD) held in January 2024 in Accra. Speaking at the event under the theme “Developing Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add Value, and Trade,” the president emphasized the need for unrestricted travel to drive economic growth.
“Many of you had to acquire a visa to attend this event,” he remarked at the APD, pledging that Ghana would remove this barrier by introducing visa-free travel for African nationals. He highlighted the policy as a necessary step toward realizing the objectives of the AfCFTA, which aims to create a single market for goods and services across Africa.
Timeline and Implementation
The policy is set to be implemented before the conclusion of President Akufo-Addo’s term on 6 January 2025. Its introduction is expected to significantly ease travel restrictions, thereby facilitating the exchange of goods, services and ideas among African nations.
Impact on Regional Integration
By adopting this policy, Ghana strengthens its role as a champion of Pan-Africanism and economic integration. The move aligns with the principles of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which envisions a continent where seamless borders enhance collaboration and development.
The visa-free policy is anticipated to boost tourism, investment and trade, offering opportunities for businesses and individuals across Africa to explore and contribute to Ghana’s growing economy.
