Lufthansa introduces stricter mask requirement from 1 February

German carrier Lufthansa has announced that its onboard mask policy will become stricter from 1 February. The airline will no longer permit what it calls “everyday masks”.

“We are adapting the policy to wear face masks while travelling. From 1 February 2021, only the following types of face masks will be permitted on flights to and from Germany: FFP2, KN95 and N95 standard or surgical masks,” the airlines said in a press statement.

“These have to be worn during boarding, on board and when leaving the aircraft. Masks made of fabric will no longer be permitted, visors and masks with valves have already been banned,” it added.

This means that only medical masks will be allowed, in addition to the disposable type surgical masks. Masks with valves are also not permitted by the airline.

“Exceptions to this regulation can still be made for health reasons. An exception will only be accepted, if the passenger can present a current (not older than 48 hours) negative Covid-19 test result in connection with a medical certificate on the Lufthansa Group form,” the airline said.

The measures, which will apply to all Lufthansa group flights to and from Germany, comes after the German government adopted rules on 19 January 2021 to make such masks mandatory in shops and on public transport in the country.
