A majority of Britons agree that Prime Minister Boris Johnson should take their country out of the European Union “by any means”, even if that involves suspending parliament, an opinion poll conducted for the Daily Telegraph has revealed.
Some 54 percent of those polled agreed with the statement “Boris [Johnson] needs to deliver Brexit by any means, including suspending parliament if necessary, in order to prevent MPs from stopping it,” the newspaper reported on Monday (12 August).
The same poll also found support for Johnson’s ruling Conservative party had risen by 6 points to 31 percent amid his pledge to leave on 31 October. That finding is largely in line with other polls showing an increase in support for the Conservatives since Johnson took over from Theresa May, who formally quit last month having failed to deliver Brexit on schedule.
Johnson is seeking a deal with the EU but has not ruled out suspending parliament to prevent lawmakers’ attempts to block a no-deal exit.
In a related development, the US wants to help the UK cushion the hard effect of Brexit with a bilateral trade deal, a senior White House official said in London on Monday.
US president Donald Trump “wants to see a successful British exit from the European Union”, the official, who asked not to be named, told British press.
