Museveni wins Uganda’s presidential election

President Yoweri Museveni has been declared winner of the 2021 Presidential election by the country’s electoral commission.

According to the commission on Saturday (16 January), Museveni won a sixth term in office with 58.6 percent of the vote, in an election disputed by his main rival Bobi Wine who trailed with 34.8 percent.

“The electoral commission declares Yoweri Museveni… elected President of the Republic of Uganda,” said election commission chairman Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama.

At a press conference on the final results from the Thursday’s election, EC revealed that Museveni won 5.85 million votes, or 58.6%, while main opposition candidate Wine had 3.48 million votes (34.8%).

Meanwhile, Wine has alleged widespread fraud during the election

It will be recalled that earlier before the announcement, Wine had on January 13, through a series of tweets alleged that the Museveni in collaboration with the electoral commission to rig the election as well as shutting down the internet.

“Conspiracy by the dictator & his biased Electoral Commission is in a new phase. A plot to rig is set, internet is completely shut down & media is censored. However, the pple of uganda are firm and nothing will stop them from ending this oppresive regime. #WeAreRemovingADictator”, Wine tweeted.

Wine, a singer-turned-lawmaker, also said his home in the capital, Kampala, was surrounded by hundreds of soldiers and that the military was not allowing him to leave.

“We are under siege. The military has jumped over the fence and has now taken control of our home“, he tweeted.

Museveni, 76 and in power for 35 years, campaigned for another term and has been announced winner of the 2021 Presidential election in Uganda.
