Karamba Diaby talks about his unusual road to German parliament

The only member of the German parliament (Bundestag) of African origin will talk about his life at a book reading in Berlin on Monday, 21 October in Berlin.

The Senegalese-born politician, who holds a doctorate degree in chemistry, will read from his book Mit Karamba in den Bundestag: Mein Weg vom Senegal ins deutsche Parlament, about his extraordinary career.

In the book, Karamba Diaby talks of his country of birth, Senegal, life in the former East Germany, where he arrived in 1985, and in the aftermath of reunification. And last but not least, his vision of an open and sustainable society.

Diaby, an SPD member (59), was reelected in 2019 to represent the eastern city of Halle in the Federal Parliament.

The election of Diaby and that of Charles Huber (CDU) as the Bundestag’s first members of African descent in 2013 marked a watershed in the history of Germany.
