The Italian chapter of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) has elected a new executive committee. The event, part of the annual general meeting of the body, took place on Saturday (13 July) in the city of Perugia.
Dr Lawrence Akuwudike Ibekwe was re-elected Chairman for a new two-year term, a sort of approval seal for its leadership of the organisation. Fidel O. Wilson, who was the immediate past General Secretary, was elected Vice Chairman while Nwokoro Ezenwa emerged the new General Secretary. Other elected officials of the new executive committee were Engr. Iduhon George Omorodion (PRO/Assistant Secretary), Chief (Barrister) Ejike Ignatius Obidike (Legal Officer), Timothy Asotie (Financial Secretary) and James Onuegbu (Social and Events Officer).
In his post-election speech, Dr Ibekwe expressed his joy that NIDO Italy was back to its vital position in the affairs of NIDO Europe (NIDOE), in a veiled reference to the crisis that plagued the body several years ago.
He also lauded Hon. Kenneth Gbandi, chairman of NIDOE – the umbrella body of all NIDO chapters in Europe, for his immense efforts to reposition the organisation. Ibekwe pledged the Italian chapter’s commitment to the growth of the organisation worldwide to make it live up to its mandate.
Fidel Wilson, the newly-elected Vice Chairman who is also the PRO of NIDOE, announced that the focus of the new executive committee would be on immigration issues, especially on providing legal and welfare support to vulnerable Nigerian women and children.
