Black People in Germany gather in Berlin for historic congress

In what could be described as a historic congress of Black people in Germany, their organisations and groups will gather in Berlin for three days (28-30 November) to take stock of the situation of people of African descent in the country.

On the first day of PAD (People of African Descent) Week Germany, Black organizations will converge for the first time in the Bundestag to draw attention of the federal parliamentarians to the situation of the about one million Afro-descendants in in the country.

Organised by Each One Teach One (EOTO) e.V., a community-based education and empowerment project in Berlin, PAD Week also marks the third anniversary of the UN International Decade for People of African origin in Germany.

On the second day, the Black community will interact with other groups in society affected by racism in open forums. The third day of the Week is devoted to an empowerment programme, bringing together 30 groups, which will dwell on capacity building in the Black community in Germany, its integration in the worlds of science, business and politics as well as public administration.

The 3-day event will also feature lectures, panel discussions and an elaborate cultural programme.

The International Decade for People of African Descent, 2015–2024, was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly and adopted on 23 December 2013. The theme of the Decade is “People of African descent: recognition, justice and development”.

The Decade highlights the human rights situation of the African diaspora worldwide and aims to fight racial discrimination and create visibility for the contribution of people of African descent in the societies they live in.

The Decade was officially launched in Germany in June 2016 in Berlin.
