Nigerians from across the globe will gather via an online conference on Saturday, 17 April to discuss how to actualise their dream of being able to vote at elections in their home country.
The conference, christened “Diaspora Voting – Panel Discussion On Nigeria’s Participation and Readiness”, will feature speakers such as Dr Bashir Obasekola, Chairman NIDO Europe; Engr Obed Monago, Chairman, NIDO-Americas; and Dr Alistair Soyode, Founder and Chair of BEN TV (UK), will discuss strategies for the achievement of the diaspora voting rights.
Other speakers expected to participate at the deliberations, co-organised by the Swiss and Ireland chapters of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, are Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman & CEO Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM); Senator Dr Ibrahim Yahya Oloriegbe, Chairman Senate Committee on Diaspora; and Hon Tolulope Akande – Sadipe, Chairman of the House of Rep Committee on Diaspora.
HE Dr Uzoma Emenike, outgoing Nigerian Ambassador to Ireland and the country’s first female ambassador to the US, and HE Baba Madugu, Nigerian Ambassador to Switzerland, will also participate at the panel discussions.
Among the specific issues to be discussed are how to prepare a bill that is acceptable to lawmakers and other stakeholders and enlist the support of the national assembly for its passage.
Hon. Barr. Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and chairman of Voter Education and Publicity Committee, is special guest at the conference.
Nigerians abroad have been clamouring for Diaspora voting rights for many years and the Saturday conference is a major move to give the clamour a boost and enlist the support of key stakeholders in Nigeria for its actualisation.
