Nigeria 2019: Vice-Presidential Candidates to Debate Today

The electioneering campaign for Nigeria’s next general polls hots up as the vice-presidential candidates of the leading five parties square up in a televised debate today (Friday, 14 December) at 7 pm.

Those to participate at the debate, organized by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group and the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, are Prof Yemi Osinbajo of the ruling APC, Peter Obi (PDP), Umma Getso (YPP), Alhaji Abdulganiyu Galadima (ACPN) and Khadijah Abdullahi-Iya (ANN).

The debate is expected to be in the main a contest between Osinbajo and Obi of the biggest opposition party, which governed Nigeria from 1999 until it was unseated in 2015.

Analysts say the debate will be very interesting as both Osinbajo and Obi are very educated and eloquent with one defending the Buhari administration on its records and the other arguing why the government should be sent packing in February when the country goes to the polls.

Obi, a successful business man who was governor of Anambra State for 8 years, is well-regarded for his competence in economic management while Osinbajo, a professor of constitutional law, will be under pressure to defend a government considered by many to have failed to live up to expectation.

Both men are expected to tell Nigerians how they would help their principals solve Nigeria’s many problems, especially the weak economy, unemployment, insecurity and corruption.

The Vice-Presidential debate will hold today at 7 pm at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. It will be transmitted live on all TV stations and streamed live on many social media platforms.

The presidential debate will also hold at the same venue on Saturday, 19 January 2019.
