Nigeria’s newest airport has begun operation. The first scheduled flight to Bayelsa Airport landed yesterday to the happiness of the government and people of the state.
The flight operated by United Nigeria Airline touched down at the international airport at 3:40pm Nigerian time from the Murtala Muhammed international airport in Lagos and Bayelsa State’s Governor Douye Diri was the first to alight from the aircraft.
The Bayelsa state government believes the state will experience rapid economic growth, manpower development and a boost in tourism potentials with the commencement of commercial flights at the airport,.
Bayelsa, which lies at the heart of the oil-producing Niger Delta, is one of the few states without an airport until the government of the state embarked on the project many years ago.
The airport, located in Yenagoa, the state capital, was completed and commissioned in February last year but was only issued a license to carry out commercial flight operations in April 2021.
