Nigeria is set to introduce an automated system for processing short-stay visas, aiming to streamline approvals, boost tourism and attract business travellers. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo recently announced that the new system would eliminate long wait times upon arrival at Nigerian airports.
Under the new policy, travelers can apply online for short-stay visas, with approvals expected within 24 to 48 hours. Once granted, the electronic visa (e-visa) will be sent directly to applicants via email, removing the need for a physical visa sticker upon arrival.
Speaking after a ministerial meeting in Abuja, Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader efforts to improve the ease of doing business, attract tourists and strengthen diplomatic relations. The move is expected to make Nigeria a more accessible destination for foreign investors and leisure visitors.
Since taking office in May 2023, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has prioritized immigration reforms, including simplifying visa procedures and easing passport issuance for Nigerians. The government has also introduced a contactless passport renewal system for Nigerians abroad, allowing them to apply online without visiting embassies in person.
