Concerned about their homeland, which is experiencing tough economic times, Nigerians in Germany will gather in Berlin on 27 July. The summit, which will feature expert panel discussions, an exhibition of Nigerian start-ups and cultural events, will produce a communique with recommendations for the Nigerian government.
Nigeria is currently experiencing challenging economic conditions due to significant policy decisions implemented by the current government upon taking office last year.
Although the policies, including the removal of government subsidy on imported petroleum products and the floating of the country’s currency naira, have been praised internationally as necessary and even long overdue, they have brought immense hardship on the people due to the ensuing sky high inflation.
The diaspora is understandably concerned about the situation in their homeland and is eager to contribute to efforts to solve the problems it faces. This is why the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization Germany e.V. (NIDO Germany) is convening a meeting of all Nigerians in Germany to deliberate on how to move their country forward.
The “Networking Summit for Nigerians in Germany”, which will hold on 27 July 2024 in Berlin, is “designed to identify potential solutions for fostering Nigeria’s economic development”, according to NIDO Germany.
Expected to attend the event, which will be chaired by Ambassador Bashir Basha, the Charge D’Affaires at the Embassy of Nigeria (acting Ambassador of Nigeria to Germany), are the leaders of Nigerian political, social, cultural, ethnic and religious organisations, as well as Nigerian entrepreneurs and professionals from various fields.
“We are inviting all Nigerians living in Germany to attend this important event,” Larry Bello, the PRO of NIDO Germany said. “It’s an opportunity to contribute to efforts to find solutions to the myriad problems confronting our nation,” he added.
A panel discussion will examine the challenges facing the economy of Africa’s most populous country and proffer solutions. Under the theme “Sustainable development in Nigeria: What are the challenges and proposed solutions?” distinguished speakers from different areas of expertise will identify strategies to promote Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
“The paradox of a country endowed with vast arable land but is dependent on food import; that is rich in both renewable and non-renewable sources but suffers from energy scarcity will be tackled by the expert speakers,” Bello said.
The summit will gather insights from the panelists and contributions from the audience to issue a communique, offering proposals to the Nigerian government on addressing the nation’s challenges.
To encourage entrepreneurship among Nigerians living in Germany and provide an avenue for interaction and networking among them, the event will feature an exhibition of Germany-based Nigerian start-ups in areas ranging from agribusiness, IT, engineering, real estate, education & training, health care services and entertainment & the creative arts, among others.
The fair will offer “attendees the opportunity to visit booths and ask specific questions following brief presentations,” NIDO Germany said. “The goal is to inspire Nigerians in Germany to become entrepreneurs and also invest in MSMEs.”
The one-day event will close with a high-quality entertainment programme, showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity. Participants will be treated to live music performances, stand-up comedy acts, and a variety of Nigerian dishes and drinks.
