The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, has formally reopened for operations after six weeks of closure.
The airport was closed to allow for the repair of its only runway.
On Tuesday, an Ethiopian Airlines Airbus A350-900 became the first plane to land on the repaired runway.
The new plane landed at about 12:10 p.m.
Local Nigerian airlines, including Medview and Air Peace, have indicated their decision to start flying the Abuja route from Wednesday.
The closure of the airport enabled the authorities to upgrade some facilities, especially in the main domestic departure terminals.
There’s now a 2nd Departure Terminal for domestic passengers (in the Arik/Air Peace wing), a government spokesman had revealed last week.
Kaduna airport served as the main international airport for the Nigerian capital city after the closure of the Abuja Airport on 8 March.
Abuja airport handled an estimated 5,000 domestic flights in December 2016 alone, making it the second busiest airport in the country after the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.
