Number of foreigners in Germany exceeds 10 million for the first time

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the population of Germany rose slightly by 227,000 in 2018. At the end of last year, 83 million people lived in Germany 10.1 million of who were foreigners, that is, inhabitants without German passport, the new report revealed.

The proportion of foreigners in the total population increased from 11.7 percent to 12.2 percent in 2018. German population also exceeded the mark of 83 million inhabitants for the first time last year.

On the one hand, statisticians recorded a migration surplus, on the other hand a birth deficit: 386,000 more people moved to Germany in 2018, than left the country. At the same time, the number of deaths exceeded births by 167,000. Overall, population growth was lower than in the two previous years: in 2017, the number of inhabitants increased by 271,000 and in 2016 by 346,000.

While the federal statisticians put the population of foreigners in Germany at 10 million, the number inhabitants who have a foreign origin however is much higher.

As reported by the Federal Statistical Office in August last year, 19.3 million women, men and children with foreign roots lived in the country in 2017. Their share of the total population was 23.6 percent. A person has a migration background if he or at least one parent was not born with German citizenship.
