THE AFRICAN COURIER. Reporting Africa and its Diaspora! The African Courier is an international magazine published in Germany to report on Africa and the Diaspora African experience. The first issue of the bimonthly magazine appeared on the newsstands on 15 February 1998. The African Courier is a communication forum for European-African political, economic and cultural exchanges, and a voice for Africa in Europe.
On 13-14 September 2024, Schloss Bellevue in Berlin, the official residence of the German President, hosted the annual Bürgerfest (Citizen Festival), a two-day event celebrating civic engagement.
This year’s festival had a special focus on Africa, with Kenya as the partner country, represented by President William Ruto, First Lady Rachel Ruto, and a powerful delegation of Kenyan officials. This marked the first time a non-European country was invited to co-host this prestigious event, highlighting the strong economic and political ties between Kenya and Germany, which span over 60 years.
Organized by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the festival showcased the importance of volunteerism and community service in strengthening democracy and social cohesion. The theme of the event, “Pamoja – Stronger Together,” reflects the spirit of collaboration and cultural exchange between the Germany and Kenya.
Day one of the event was dedicated to honouring volunteers from across Germany who have made outstanding contributions in fields such as social work, education, healthcare, and environmental conservation. President Steinmeier expressed gratitude to these individuals, emphasizing that “civic engagement is the lifeblood of our society.” He also highlighted the global significance of solidarity, especially in addressing challenges like climate change and migration, themes resonating with both Germany and Kenya.
Kenya’s role as the partner country was central to the festival, with President William Ruto addressing the gathering. In his speech, Ruto highlighted the shared values of community and solidarity between Germany and Kenya, saying, “Civic engagement is a powerful force that transcends borders. It is through the work of ordinary citizens that we build nations and foster international cooperation.” He also spoke about the significance of Germany and Kenya’s partnership in promoting sustainable development and social inclusion.
Kenya’s participation as the partner country brought a vibrant African dimension to the festival. On the second day, which was open to the public, African artists took the stage, delivering captivating performances of traditional music and dance, alongside Kenyan contemporary artists who showcased the rich cultural heritage of the nation. These performances added a dynamic and colourful touch to the celebration, highlighting the cultural ties between Germany and Kenya.
Visitors enjoyed live performances, interactive workshops, and a variety of culinary experiences from both Germany and Kenya. The festival provided an opportunity for German citizens to engage with Kenyan culture, while also promoting discussions around shared values of community, civic responsibility, and international cooperation.
The 2024 Bürgerfest not only celebrated civic engagement but also deepened the friendship between Germany and Kenya, showcasing how nations can come together to inspire and promote social good. The partner federal state this year is Lower Saxony.
A key highlight of President Ruto’s visit was the signing of a groundbreaking labour migration agreement between Kenya and Germany aimed at streamlining the process for skilled and semi-skilled Kenyans to access employment in Europe’s largest economy.
Festival showcases African community’s contributions
Several organisations, including The African Network of Germany (TANG), showcased the contributions and achievements of Africans living in Germany during the Bürgerfest, the German President’s Citizen Festival, held on 13-14 September at Schloss Bellevue in Berlin.
For example, TANG’s participation, under the theme “Diversity in Engagement,” featured a variety of events, including panel discussions, a fashion show and music performances.
TANG, which supports over 900 African associations in Germany, also used the Bürgerfest to promote African views on migration, integration and development cooperation.
Key issues such as migration from Africa and its impact on both the continent and European countries, including Germany, were at the forefront of discussions.
Moreover, the event provided festival visitors the opportunity to engage with Afro-German experts and activists in fields such as education, health, politics and development.
