Sunday Oliseh has resigned his post as head coach of German Regionalliga side SV Straelen. The former Nigerian international quit the job on Sunday due to the poor performance of club since he took over as chief trainer.
SV Straelen has lost all five matches under Oliseh in the regional league, scoring just once in the five league outings. In the DFB Cup, the club also lost 3:4 to FC St. Pauli.
The 47-year-old former Bundesliga professional, who played with 1. FC Köln, Borussia Dortmund and VfL Bochum, had only been in Straelen since the beginning of the season. Oliseh had won gold with Nigeria at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
“Of course, that was not a tenure that was crowned with success. There was a big upheaval in the squad. It was not an easy start for Sunday Oliseh. Nevertheless, the team has quality and unfortunately this potential could not yet be realised,” said Kevin Wolze, SV Straelen’s sports director.
“Sunday obviously had the feeling that the team could no longer be reached. We have to accept this decision. It doesn’t make sense to try to persuade him to continue,” he added.
Wolze, a former professional player, has temporarily taken over from Oliseh pending when a replacement for the Nigerian is found.
